Transition in Action, Totnes 2030, an Energy Descent Action Plan

Vision 2030

Our water is fresh and sparkling. It flows from source to the sea without contamination or shortage. The estuaries and sea are clean and full of life. Water is valued and no longer wasted. Extraordinary and elaborate irrigation systems have been set up on farms and grey water trickles along the ditches. The crops farmers grow, and the plants in gardens and public spaces have changed to accommodate the warmer climate and scarcity of water. Many hard surfaces have been torn up to allow the rain to reach the groundwater. Many people have compost toilets. The Leechwell has become a sacred place in Totnes. Many of the old aquifers in the gardens of houses on Main Street and Fore St. have been re-opened and some people are selling bottled Totnes water from the shops. We respect our water; we understand how to look after our water, and we celebrate our good fortune in having good drinking water.

Assumptions around Water

From: EDAP meetings and public workshops

  • Strategic resource – no longer a market
  • Greater localization of resources
  • Migration & water wars
  • Water scarcity – we will need to find ways to survive with less
  • Water sources will become more diverse and localised
  • More intensive rain & sun
  • Major flooding in London ( a major tipping point?)
  • Water quality – national standards administered nationally
  • Water filtration will replace chemical treatment
  • Local water standards? Quality issues may be difficult – envisage a completely different structure
  • ? national water standards by 2030 a luxury – we will be looking at survival

the old aquifers [?] in the gardens of houses on Main Street a

    wells, perhaps?

These were naturally rising water forming a number of springs which originally drained down Totnes high street. If they were to be revived they would be wells as the water table is likely to have dropped.
