  • People are very happy enjoying their natural gardens and allotments and have a strong appreciation of nature. They feel very connected to wildlife as they support many small animals and plants in their gardens and have given a lot of time to observing nature for surveys. Having witness the stress to wildlife from global warming and human abuse, most people would put biodiversity before profit as they understand its intrinsic value.
  • Farmers need a lot of help with maintaining the wildlife on their land and many local people and clubs have got involved in helping out on a regular basis.

  • The Mayday celebrations have become more meaningful as people celebrate the return of the migratory birds, each year hoping they will return despite the huge climatic difficulties in other countries they depend on. People celebrate the fertility of the soil and the major events associated with this festival are used to plan the year’s conservation activities and visit sites to assess where action needs to be taken
  • Local conservation groups are held in high esteem by everyone as they do such dedicated work and the restoration work is known to have saved many species of wildlife.

  • The local task forces set up to conserve biodiversity have been well resourced and have worked well with local conservation groups. DCC has made some substantial awards recognising the work being carried out by many groups.
  • The UK Minister for Biodiversity and Nature remarked on the exemplary example by the people of Totnes and District in being amongst the first to rise to the challenge of taking strong and significant measures to conserve and care for local biodiversity.
  • Internationally there is major concern that many ecosystems are being pushed to their limits due to the extreme weather. Vast migrations have led to many areas in Northern Africa and the US Mid West being abandoned and although they are under extreme duress, the unusual flooding is bringing back some life to them
