Transition in Action, Totnes 2030, an Energy Descent Action Plan

By 2030, Totnes and District has successfully retained its creative, artistic edge, and the arts are more an element of people’s everyday experience of life in the area. The ‘Transition years’ have brought together people in exciting and imaginative ways to enjoy and express their feelings and talents through creative community-based activities and developments. The Dartington Estate continues to benefit local society through its nurturing presence supporting new ideas and ways of being creative. Localisation has expanded creative talent at a more practical level and artistic expression is to be seen in almost every product, building and view.

Artists, writers, singers, poets, actors have all found more local support as people want their local areas where they spend more time to be enriched with local culture, and with little electricity available for TV, people spend more time enjoying live performance, and everyone now has a ‘turn’ to perform at parties and social events, a song, a story, a magic trick. One of the most profound changes has been how what was, thirty years previously, a community that largely saw art as something to be bought/consumed, now sees it as part of everyday life, with locally-made crockery, furniture and other household essentials being more commonplace than the long-travelled, high carbon, Ikea-style products of twenty years previously.
