  • Young people are very likely to stay local when they finish school as cities have become far less attractive with few jobs and many have experienced severe flooding. Community based gap years in other communities have become popular for young people who wish to travel around and pay their way.

  • Local band Totters are the star turn at the Totnes Festival with their remix of the old Christian’s song “When will there be a harvest for the world?” they have updated the words to “now there is a harvest for the world.”

  • BBC’s Today programme introduces a daily Youth Slot. Hosted by Tennis Stars Renee Brown and Joe Boyle the young guests discuss topics from teenage angst to meeting global energy needs. The newly appointed Youth Minister John Markham is interviewed by 17 year old Andrea Jones from South Brent on the issue of local currency; “Minister, what is your view on local teenagers having the choice of getting a 15% increase on their EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) if its paid in Totnes and District pounds. This would help stimulate our local economy…..”
