Individuals
- Over 1,000 young people in Devon vote for their representatives on the UK Youth Parliament. Using LocalEyes website they come up with a list of their key priorities they want their new representatives to bring to meetings. Top priorities include more play spaces, skateboard areas and safe cycle lanes.
- Struggling up Fore Street on his refurbished bike, 10 year old Brian Walters tells his parents, that his is the “coolest bike in town” although it is a bit big for him.
Community
- KEVICCS uses part of the citizenship education study time as part of students’ 50 hours community programme. Some students opt to work in the school garden, others helping elders to do some shopping.
- Dartington Plus Summer Youth programme sparks off 3 new youth bands in Totnes, Dartington and Marldon.
- Diptford Community group establish a new Youth Club at Village Hall. Having helped raise funds for 2 table tennis tables and bats, the under 14s and under 18s youth groups will use the hall on Thursday and Friday nights.
Policy Makers & Service Providers
- Reports back the UK Government 2 year pilots to test ways of significantly increasing the numbers of 14-16 years olds participating in community service, indicate ‘being listened to’ is key to success.
- DCC offers equipment funding to organisations who wish to expand community hall facilities for youth groups. The youth group at Cornworthy are straight on the case with an application for a self-assembly wind turbine kit to run the Dubstep Sound System.
