Vision 2030
By 2030, Totnes and district has become a shining light for a sustainable, localised and resilient community. People feel close to each other, they know their neighbours and do many things together. Most people are involved in some activity outside of their household that benefits other people and through this young people, older people, those with special needs and newcomers are involved and included and their needs supported through the local community. People are happy living and working together. There is a strong sense of common purpose.
The difficulties of peak oil and climate change have bonded local society through a common purpose which has evolved into strong networks of people linked together in a mutually beneficial system of producers, service providers and consumers contributing towards and meeting local needs. Local people have a strong voice in how their community is developed. Participatory democracy is strong and well developed. Educational systems support all ages and confer a strong sense of citizenship and understanding about sustaining community and the wider global issues affecting society. Crime has remained almost non-existent. Local people are actively involved with policy makers and service providers in development planning and decision making processes. There are strong mechanisms and contingency plans in place for difficulties that may arise from time to time, and local problem solving has opened up empowerment for local society who enjoy a good debate.
The community enjoy good access to public services and facilities. Adequate clean water, health care, education, transport, housing, and energy needs are usually met. There are many open public spaces where local people meet and do things together, the community hall is a special place which is widely used and valued. The local environment is respected, valued and cared for in a shared stewardship by all sectors, mitigation of the damage done by previous carelessness is being repaired. People understand the need to live within the carrying capacity of the earth and that resources must be shared and sustained for future generations, in this they are content with less and share what they can. There is no waste or glut, when resources are low, people understand that all must have a lower share and that everyone else is experiencing the same.
People are happy, well-adjusted and live meaningful lives within the carrying capacity of the local area.
