Transition in Action, Totnes 2030, an Energy Descent Action Plan

Zero Carbon Britain?

The Centre for Alternative Energy in Wales commissioned a report in 2008 to consider the challenge of having our energy supplies produced entirely from renewable resources. Their findings were that by the year 2030 in order to meet energy needs, we need to be producing 50% of current usage through renewable energy and 0% from conventional fuels. To achieve this a number of hurdles will have to be overcome. ZCB 2008 estimates that we can reduce consumption by 50% through energy efficiency and energy conservation measures, in particular through major improvements in insulation of buildings, energy efficiency, and substantial reductions in use of individual transport. With rising costs of energy, households are likely to reduce their consumption further in small but accumulatively significant ways. Other measures such as rationing may be applied by the government to curb demand in line with supply problems as they arise.

Please refer to the Energy Budget section for discussion on the ability of T&D to meet this target
