2026-2030
Individuals
- Garden lawns, which take up carbon from the atmosphere (through different grass varieties with deeper roots) come into fashion as concerns about climate change continue to rise. People ‘adopt’ foreign landholdings as stewards for carbon sequestration.
- Energy bills have declined with global warming and more spare energy is sold back to the grid than anticipated, taking advantage of the better tariffs for households.
Community
- Harberton’s new Dance n’ Disco floor at the Community hall harnesses feet power. The idea catches on at 5 more community halls in the district. Pedal power films arrive in the district to pilot work researched by People Power, who has already created a wave of interest in treadle power for household appliances including dishwashers.
- Algae ponds for bio-diesel production are established at ATMOS in the flooded gardens.
Policy Makers & Service Providers
- SHDC does a deal with Devon County Council to sell surplus national energy quotas. Council tax comes down as a result.
- New Local Authority housing at Old China Blue premises is a model of good planning and wins award for minimal embodied energy and systems.
- Totnes station gets a makeover in line with the Atmos Project. The refurbished waiting rooms, Whistle stop café and new footbridge reflect the strong artistic and energy aware designing. The giant carbon calculator on platform 2 now enables travellers to measure their carbon clean-up footprint while waiting
