The Atmos Project is being developed with the intention of bringing into community ownership and developing the former Dairy Crest milk processing plant, which closed in 2006 with the loss of 160 jobs. It is a partnership of Totnes Town Council, Totnes Chamber & District of Commerce, Totnes Development Trust, Totnes & District Community Strategy Group and Transition Town Totnes.

The project has been developed to meet many of the economic and social requirements of Totnes and its parishes. It is striving to create a vibrant place for businesses, visitors and the whole community. Its Vision for the Atmos Project is:

  • To be a unique, contemporary, globally significant, carbon neutral site development
  • To be an inspiring place to live, work, learn and relax
  • To be partially owned and managed as a community enterprise closely aligned to the emerging response to peak oil
  • To complement and improve the prosperity of other organisations in the area by attracting new investment, new talent and new customers
  • To establish a meaningful connection with this historic town; selecting environmentally responsible materials and building forms.
