Transition in Action, Totnes 2030, an Energy Descent Action Plan

Energy

Until the 1950s, Totnes was powered mainly by ‘town gas’, that is, gas made in situ from coal. The gas was produced in three large gasometres sited near the Grove School. These took in coal and used them to produce the gas, which was used to run street lighting and also for domestic supply. This was superceded as natural gas supply arrived.

To tell a complete story, it would be worth noting where that coal came from.
